The True Story

Stories are swirling over a girl named Emma who allegedly committed suicide on Christmas eve, 2008, as the result of some Facebook status update messages aimed at her. The status update messages directed at “Emma” are indeed horrible (see image below), however, there is doubt that a girl named Emma actually committed suicide on Christmas eve, or at all, even though a Facebook fan page entitled “Teenager committed SUICIDE because of THIS status update - Leaked from 2008″ would have you think otherwise. However, the story does match quite closely the suicide of Phoebe Prince, which occurred this January.

The question of whether someone named Emma was on Facebook in 2008, and committed suicide as a result of Facebook messages to her, is raised by a relatively new Facebook fan page, entitled “Teenager committed SUICIDE because of THIS status update - Leaked from 2008″. The Facebook fan page was created, it claims, to raise awareness of cyberbullying and to put a stop to cyberbullying.

The page has an image of the alleged messages, with a strategic section crossed out, saying that you have to “BECOME A FAN TO SEE FULL PIC”.

(Our image below shows the full set of messages, with nothing crossed out.)

This is known as a “squeeze” in marketing parlance, however it’s rather unusual on a Facebook fan page (not unheard of, but unusual - especially for such a supposedly altruistic effort).

OMG... This GIRL KILLED Herself After HER DAD Posted This ON Her WALL!

Here is the interesting bit: The page claims that this happened in 2008. However, if you look at the image, you can clearly see that two people “liked” the messages (gave them a Facebook thumbs-up).

Now, Facebook only rolled out the new “like” button a few weeks ago.

So, almost certainly this entire thing is a hoax.

In addition, if you search for any of the sentences shown in the image, Google finds nothing at all. That’s unheard of for Facebook status messages, which are indexed very quickly by Google. It’s possible that these were messages within private accounts, but if a girl named Emma had actually committed suicide over a year ago over these messages, you can be sure the messages would be posted somewhere that Google could find it.

This all adds up to the Facebook page claiming “Teenager committed SUICIDE because of THIS status update - Leaked from 2008″ being a hoax, at best, and a trap at worst. (On the other hand, the story of Phoebe Prince is all-too-real. Phoebe committed suicide this Janary after being tormented by several classmates, much of it on Facebook. Nine teens and juveniles are now facing charges for her death.)

What do we mean by trap?

Given the questionable nature of the page, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this page will play on your heart strings to get you to click on the “join” link, only to download a Facebook virus to your computer.

Our advice? Avoid this page. If you want to do something about cyberbullying, check out sites like Stop Cyberbullying.org instead.

If this wasn’t a hoax, it is a little strange that the supposed Dad’s surname is shorter than his daughters. Yes I know she could use her Mother’s surname but it detracted from the authenticity of it.

This is such bullshit! Nobody’s father would write that and, no offence, but if you’re getting bullied on Facebook…stop going on fucking Facebook!

The like button has been on Facebook for a long time (at least 1-2 years). It wasn’t until a few weeks ago one could ‘like’ specific comments. So it’s not impossible as it seemed that the screenshot is from 2008.

However, I’ve seen a lot of unusual claims in these fan pages like “this person died after taking this picture” and such which, through that pattern, makes the claim dubious. Your observations about different lengths of the surnames seem to make it much more unlikely that her father said that (which is a claim by itself). The claim that she committed suicide after her dad posted the comment implies that it was because of him. I can understand if people would make the connection that the comment caused the suicide. I’ll admit that I thought so myself until I went over it carefully.

Additionally, why would someone who’s determined to get a strong message across force you to be a member to see it?

I find it very interesting since this was MAJOR news when this happened- that you could even find someone who would not have heard of this and actually think the dad was involved. Law and Order even did an episode around this.
This was NOT a Hoax! There was a girl who killed herself because of messages she received on a social networking site (not sure if was even facebook- could have been myspace!) BUT…. they did not come from her dad! They came from a class mates MOM, who pretended to be a teenager (more specifically a teenage boy I believe) and sent nasty messages to her.
I agree with littlemissjok, nothing said would be worth me taking my life. I am 31 went through high school like everyone else, and much like everyone else was picked on and “bullied”. It wasn’t easy but I made it through, just like a lot of other people. NEVER once thought of killing myself, because of someone’s nasty comments, and believe me I had heard quite a few. Not worth it. I have to say though that was before people could electronically harass you! LOL! But, either way littlemissjok is right! If you are being bothered stop going onto facebook, and let someone know what is happening.
I think it is sad that a mother (I am a mother of 4) felt the need to get involved in petty bullshit, and make matters worse. I think it is sad that this girl felt her only escape was to kill herself. Having said that I think the site on facebook should be taken down, and this should be done with. Let the poor girl rest in peace!

    @littlemissjoker
if the person getting bullied stop going on facebook then they bulliers are either just gonna do it worse online, or in person. its not gonna solve anything. and if they did stop bullying a specific person because they stopped going on their facebook, then theyd most likely attack someone else..

Facebook’s status “likes” have always been there.
    Tards.
If she did, that sucks honestly.
People writing crap like this on facebook are just seriously ridiculous.
No life to portray a typical bitch stereotype you see in movies pertaining to highschool.
    It’s really sad.
To respond with suicide is even sadder, but w/e too many people in this world.
If her father posted that as the comment, that’s just retarded but come on, how the hell would he know girls are THIS fucking stupid now these days?
He lived in a different time, he doesn’t hang out with his own children for that matter.
    God dam controversy. -.-

    @Mutt
yeah but how do you know that shes taken her dads last name? her parents couldve had a divorce or smthing n she couldve changed it to her mums last name. or there could be other reasons, some people dont like to have their last names or decide to change their facebook names because they want to.

Ermm incase some of you guys didnt know , her last name does look longer than his but most teens my age add things to there names, like mine is Jessie SillyWilly:D - do you realy think thats my name - and i can asure you my mum or dads name is shorter than that , and y would it be news if it was fake ? ? ? and to Anonymous , if its shame on the perso nwho made this group then why the hell comment ? and maybe the person who created this group was trying to make people aware - also yh i bet her dad is greiving but one things for shore if that was my dad he would nt of put ‘girls these days’ he would have ripped that little b****es head off and if that guy was my dad I would have been mortifide , what type of dad would do that , he is ment to pretect his daughter not make her feel worse , so for that reason I hope he grieves for a long time.. . .if it is his fault anyway .

If this page (or similar) was created 2 years ago, like you say - then how did the people who created this story KNOW at THAT time to put ‘like’ there?

@jessica simpson not the singer - It was news because the story itself is not fake. Whatever, they have done on here is fake! THE DAD NEVER WROTE ANYTHING!!!!! All those posts are made up! The dad NEVER commented. AND IT DIDN’T EVEN HAPPEN ON FACEBOOK IT WAS MYSPACE!!!!!
1st- it was a boy and a girl, not two girls. It was the MOM of a classmate ( who lived on their block 4 doors away) her teenaged daughter, and her 18 year old employee who made up a boy named Josh. The group tried to get Megan (the girls real name not EMMA) to fall in love with this guy specifically so he could break her heart. The MOM wanted Megan to trust “JOSH” so she could talk about other kids including her own daughter, and then the group to pass the information around and start crap. There was no bullying like above! It was e-mails back and forth and some AOL im messages. The bullying did not come in until the end when the group broke Megan and “Josh” up so to speak. They had him send an e-mail to her saying basically (paraphrasing) that he knew that she was not nice to her friends, and everyone in their town new how nasty she was, and that the world would be better off with out her. She then sent a e-mail response saying that he was the type of guy a girl could kill herself over.
YES, the neighbor “group” brought up on charges. Too long to explain the outcome. BUT the point is that what ever this is above is FAKE it is not the REAL story! I apologize I seem annoyed, but I explain all of this in my comment above, so if you had read the whole thing you would have understood why I said it was a major news story and fake. By-the-way, this did not happen recently this happened in 2006- did not make the news until 2007, and did get prosecuted until 2008. Please people DO NOT BE NAIVE! If you see something GOOGLE it. I happened to have heard about this case when if first happened but god if google is so much comes up. You can google “the girl who killed herself over myspace messages”.

@jessica simpson not the singer It was news! The story is real of a girl who killed herself. BUT… this story above is fake. In the real story the girls name was Megan not Emma. Her dad never posted any kind of comments, and IT DIDN’T EVEN HAPPEN ON FACEBOOK IT WAS MYSPACE!!!!!!

1- It was girls (as was shown above). It was a group- A classmates MOM, the classmate, and the mom’s 18 year old employee. They made a fake page for a boy named “JOSH”. They made JOSH befriend Megan in an attempt for Megan to fall in love and JOSH to break her heart. Also, the MOM wanted Megan to trust JOSH so she could get dirt on Megan, and have Megan talking about other kids including her daughter so she could pass it around and start crap.
2- It was never bullying on posts like above. It was done over e-mails and it wasn’t even bullying until the last message. That was when the “group” decided to have JOSH send an e-mail to Megan saying he no longer wanted to talk to her or be her friend, because (I am paraphrasing) he heard she was a bad friend and everyone knows she is a nasty person. She then (the same day) sent a response e-mail saying that he is the kind of boy a girl could kill herself over. Then she hung herself from her closet. By-the-way this case was not recent. It took place in 2006, it didnot hit the news until 2007, and was not prosecuted until 2008.
Yes, the “group” was brought up on charges, but the outcome is too long and sketchy to write.
I am sorry if I seem annoyed, but if you had read my WHOLE comment and not just taken the first sentence you would have understood what I meant. I am the mother of 4 and I find it very offensive that anyone would blame the dad. No parent would encourage their child to kill themselves. I think it is sick that this is even on here. NOT only is it not true about the Dad, but he is a grieving father, and doesn’t need to be attacked in this manner.

P.S. to anyone reading this thing above: All you have to do is google it. I heard about this case in the news when it first happened. BUT, god if you google it so much comes up. Just google “the girl who killed herself over myspace.” They even have a wikipedia page on her. Please everyone from now on google something before you jump to conclusions.

Oh, and I left out on the last e-mail message that JOSH sent to her he told her the world would better off without her. There were also messages on that same day that took place via AOL messenger.
