Yes, he really did kill himself after taking this picture, but not immediately. He stuck to the journalistic principals of only documenting and not getting involved and left this little girl to die.

He did see many horrible things and they all weighed heavily upon him.

And he did something very weak, and killed himself.

he killed himself 3 months after this was taken, he won a Pulitzer for it too, he was heavily criticized for not helping the young girl as he sat there for 20 min waiting for the vulture to spread its wings as the vulture knew the girl was ready to die and was just waiting for her to die, he took the picture then shooed the bird away, he then killed himself 3 months later because he was so badly in debt and couldn’t keep up with payments on debts or child maintenance!

He didnt want to help her as its nature, you shouldnt help nature, if you see a duckling get washed away from mother, you shouldnt pick it up and put it back, you should let it die, it sounds harsh but its true, and that little girl probably could even be saved, so ill that there was no hope.

Awww but Chlorasha was right the kid most likely would have died even if he would have got her away from the bird and took her somewhere..Very sad and depressing but sometimes even if you try to help there really isn’t any hope….I would have tried to help but he knew she was gone already.

he couldnt help the girl because he wasnt allowed to, while on the trip local medics told the them not to get into close contact with dying people because they may have deadly diseases etc. but even so i dont find it a good enough reason not to help someone who is on the verge of dying. yes some may argue that even if he did help she may die, but how would you know if you dont even try?

If you cannot help a dying child, then you hold her…

His name was Kevin Carter. The Manic Street Preachers wrote a song about him. Think they used him as an allegory for the fact that we all see awful things but dont do anything about them. I mean whats to stop any one of us getting on a plane right now and helping out in some small way over in darfur etc ?

Also,he didnt leave the girl to die. Carter was with the Red Cross who took the child to a medical camp but she passed away.

Yes it’s very sad and all that but there is a far far simpler answer to this……sterilise the women and vasectomise the men! Why does this not ring out with the western world that third world countries breed and breed and breed and cannot support themselves, let alone any offspring brought into the world. Then comes the pleading faces, the woe, the misery and once again, we are all lured in to throwing money at the probem only to find it rarely makes its way to the destination!

This is the saddest photograph I have ever seen in my life.I feel so sorry for that little girl.I will never understand why the people over there keep screwing and producing more babies. They are so stupid and selfish and should be dealt with.If some kind of punishment was administered then maybe they would stop doing it as much and they all wouldn’t be starving to death, especially the babies who have no way to help themselves.Mari is right, all the men should be forced to get a vasectomy or face punishment of some kind.< this last input was my opinion but she is also right about money that is supposed to go there to feed starving people. Most of it never gets there.I think I read that only 20% ever makes it to hellp anyone. The rest is pocketed by the people running the stuff.I say this because I just can't believe that it would cost 80% of donations to get food to them.Vasectomy's are cheaper than tying a woman's tubes.I would make it mandatory and give them no choice in the matter.Maybe even do it at birth for awhile…I don't know.I know that sounds harsh and most people would say that they should be allowed to choose if they want babies but that's bull crap.If they just did it for a little while it would make a huge difference.

omfg u guys are DUMB !
third world countrys have unstable corupted government and their economy is fucked up, it’s like a never ending cicle. It’s not their fault that they live in poor countrys, when government is stealing their incomings and money. They are forced to live that way. HOW can u say such a stupid thing they should be sterile and never have children? Their children are their only hope.

    Shame your selfs!!

Yes, he did kill himself. He was given the pulitzer prize for this photo, but neglected to carry this baby to the food supplies and ended up killing himself over all of the criticism. Saw it in the DC Newseum. It’s very real and very sad.

Anyone who finds this depressing is a fool. People die everyday, the human race isn’t any more significant than the life of an ant. If anything the mother that bore this child should be the one to blame for having a child when they were impoverished to this extent. Yes the picture is sad, but not worth killing yourself over, or even to be dwelled upon. Life goes on people die everyday, not saying it’s right but damn suck it up!

The people who pressed ‘funny’ are just horrible, this photographer wasen’t ALLOWED to help her, as she could carry disease. This is really sad, and to make it worse, the bird in the background could of killed the child as soon as the photographer left the young girl. He did o something to help though, scared away the vultures while he was there, so they didnt kill her. </3 Poor little child :'( </3
