The True Story

Stories are swirling over a girl named Emma who allegedly committed suicide on Christmas eve, 2008, as the result of some Facebook status update messages aimed at her. The status update messages directed at “Emma” are indeed horrible (see image below), however, there is doubt that a girl named Emma actually committed suicide on Christmas eve, or at all, even though a Facebook fan page entitled “Teenager committed SUICIDE because of THIS status update – Leaked from 2008″ would have you think otherwise. However, the story does match quite closely the suicide of Phoebe Prince, which occurred this January.

The question of whether someone named Emma was on Facebook in 2008, and committed suicide as a result of Facebook messages to her, is raised by a relatively new Facebook fan page, entitled “Teenager committed SUICIDE because of THIS status update – Leaked from 2008″. The Facebook fan page was created, it claims, to raise awareness of cyberbullying and to put a stop to cyberbullying.

The page has an image of the alleged messages, with a strategic section crossed out, saying that you have to “BECOME A FAN TO SEE FULL PIC”.

(Our image below shows the full set of messages, with nothing crossed out.)

This is known as a “squeeze” in marketing parlance, however it’s rather unusual on a Facebook fan page (not unheard of, but unusual – especially for such a supposedly altruistic effort).

OMG... This GIRL KILLED Herself After HER DAD Posted This ON Her WALL!

Here is the interesting bit: The page claims that this happened in 2008. However, if you look at the image, you can clearly see that two people “liked” the messages (gave them a Facebook thumbs-up).

Now, Facebook only rolled out the new “like” button a few weeks ago.

So, almost certainly this entire thing is a hoax.

In addition, if you search for any of the sentences shown in the image, Google finds nothing at all. That’s unheard of for Facebook status messages, which are indexed very quickly by Google. It’s possible that these were messages within private accounts, but if a girl named Emma had actually committed suicide over a year ago over these messages, you can be sure the messages would be posted somewhere that Google could find it.

This all adds up to the Facebook page claiming “Teenager committed SUICIDE because of THIS status update – Leaked from 2008″ being a hoax, at best, and a trap at worst. (On the other hand, the story of Phoebe Prince is all-too-real. Phoebe committed suicide this Janary after being tormented by several classmates, much of it on Facebook. Nine teens and juveniles are now facing charges for her death.)

What do we mean by trap?

Given the questionable nature of the page, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this page will play on your heart strings to get you to click on the “join” link, only to download a Facebook virus to your computer.

Our advice? Avoid this page. If you want to do something about cyberbullying, check out sites like Stop Cyberbullying.org instead.

    Stupid and fake you’re not allowed to put shit like this online. It’s illegal and if any family where to gain wind on this they could sue. So no I think this is stupid and fake. Stuff like this actually happens sometimes so no one should make up something like this.

    @Mutt
    She could’ve been using her middle name and last name, so that makes it longer.

    That Jessa bitch needs to grow the fuck up. If she has something to say, say it to Emma’s face! Don’t be a fucked up wimp and bully her on facebook.
    I agree that Emma does need to step up instead of claiming to kill herself. But Jessa needs to understand that nobody gives a fuck to people like her.

    @N.M.
    The incident you speak of was the suicide of Megan Meier, I presume? That was huge news when it occurred, and I agree with you.

    If this is true, the only people suffering are the people left behind, like I don’t think the bullies are gonna have a great life after making someone else kill themselves, they’ll have to live with that for the rest of their lives, I think that’s punishment enough, personally I could never live with myself if I was in any part responsible for someone else dying, especially not this directly.

    Ok, wait. Why are people talking about the dad? The Jessa girl is the one who posted the huge, mean paragraph. WTF?

    The dad isn’t friends with Jessa. This is a post by Jessa on his daughter’s wall, therefore he can comment on it.

    Also, he said nothing mean or negative. His comment was lamenting the way girls act these days, indicating that Jessa is being stupid and petty, something that Emma should ignore.

    look at what this has become regardless this girl is real or not this problem has become a epidemic. with tech the way it is our younger generation are falling into these traps our parents or older folks would have not even considered this being a problem but things are the way there are now whether we like it or not, yeah maybe she was weak she didn’t listen, she should have been stronger, she knows whats right and wrong, blah blah blah. likes didn’t come out till then “I know” the computer says so how long are we gonna blame time lines, things that are mechanical,machines that have nobody to answer for. you think people have killed them self for less then this all over the world? people kill themselves everyday should we think of them for that reason. its not about what we would do in the situation everybody deals with shit in there own way some better that others. the realism is that this happens maybe its your kid but there to ashamed to tell or prideful maybe like yourself, i can fix it ,but don’t tell me you yourself have never been overwhelmed by something in your life that you can’t fix that there’s nothing you can do, well I hope you had friends to help but its sound like “this person” didn’t, have you been so low that it felt like no one can help you, its a horrible feeling and I pray for the people who feel this to get through it and I don’t believe in god, but still I pray. Its up to everyone in themselves to fight through it you do it for yourself, to make you stronger, some people fall behind in that race, so do we stand on sidelines and judge them while they run in circles, or should we think hey keep going one day one time you will find the yellow tape.

    I don’t believe this story for a second, but if it is true I hope that girls poor soul rests in peace. I read in an earlier comment someone left that they got bullied and never thought about killing themselves. I’d like this person to know:: You’re a strong person for not killing yourself, but sometime some people can’t find that strength and they feel lost and alone. Killing themselves may feel like the only way to numb the pain..

    @littlemissjoker

    It’s a true story. I’ve read it in newspapers about this case.
    I believe most of this stuff is pure bullshit. But this one is true.
    But she didn’t kill herself because of her dad. She did it because of that fucked up bitch.

    When you’re bullied, it’s like days in school go on forever. You become so terrified that you won’t even leave your own house, due to the fact that you can get jumped by numerous people. Bullying not only eats you up. But you become depressed and you always feel worthless. Committing suicide seems your only option for so many people. You are so afraid that you don’t even look forward to life when you wake up in the morning. Since i am writing anonymously, I can say that I was bullied to the point where I thought there was no where to turn. So I laid on train tracks and waited for a train. Fortunatley My friend Jessica stopped me. But then I was teased about trying to kill myself. I was called a coward. I was called emo and a whore and a firecrotch and every name imaginable. I was jumped every time I left the house. I felt so alone. I felt like everything I said was dumb and pointless. I felt like no one cared and everyone was laughing at me. Being bullied is one of the worst feelings in your life and that’s why I would never ever do it to someone else.

    @N.M.
    um, you have confused two different events. the one you are referring to did happen and because of it laws that could handle cyber bullying of the type that occurred had to be developed as the mother was culpable due to the two families previously being close and her being aware of the young girls ongoing issues with depression. it was a dreadful case but it has nothing at all to do with this present case (which i believe to be a hoax). one was on myspace, and this is on FB. one (the real story) was a big deal in the media and no one has any record at all anywhere on the net about this other one – ergo big fake, and even when its pointed out you still believe it. it pulls at the heart strings (and yeah, i’m a mum too) but some critical thinking skills wouldnt go astray in this world. i’m sick of getting this spam rubbish.

    what the hell? dont you people (cant be bothered responding to individual comments) read?!? its fake. yes this stuff does happen and needs to be addressed (two of my friends do presentations on bullying and cyber bullying in local schools here) but this was not in any public media. the media are fast to pick this stuff up, and while similar things have happened, none had this MO in terms of the comments and interaction depicted. so for those of you still treating this like its real, go ahead and join the page, but keep your virus protection up and your purse/wallet shut, cos you are fodder for hackers and scammers.
