Here’s the truth

The whole phenomenon was staged by a well known internet prankster – David Thorne.

David Thorne intended to create the page to highlight errors with Facebook’s privacy settings, and to also sell T-Shirts through novice-looking t-shirt shops, using distrubution channels available easily such as “Cafepress.com”.

An example of Mr. Thorne’s main shop is here

How he did it
David Thorne created fake profiles for Kate Miller and her friend and created the event. He then began advertising the event on internet chat boards such as /b/. Mr. Thorne sold thousands of t-shirts through his various shopfronts, whilst attempting to make it seem like facebook users were doing the selling.

Realising the prank, Facebook shutdown the event on the 26/04/2010 at approx 2.22am, when the event had 60000+ attendees.

Since then, Mr. Thorne and others have attempted to recreate the original hype, with varying success.

So who is it in the picture? More to come.
